ai hits a nerve

Mosaic Star

I was flabbergasted that my comments about ai in calls for submissions resonated with so many people on Mastodon, so much so that I expanded on it here on my blog. To my utter amazement, the post shot to the top of the Discovery Feed. Thanks to everyone that read it and took the time to put a finger on the little chevron at the bottom. And thanks for the email comments. Those are amazing.

I discovered Bear Blog just days ago. Thanks to Herman, and lots of reading about where to put symbols and odd hieroglyphics, I have a site that works for me. Originally I was going to use it mostly for posting rants, ideas, and the occasional poem/story. While I will still use it for this, maybe it is even more useful as the vessel to contain my ire with ai in the arts. Ire? More like mistrust... no, disgust... not quite, abject hatred gets close.

I will try to share why I feel like this; why I never capitalize ai (it doesn’t deserve the respect); why accepting it--or even pieces of it--can only lead to less creative, less intelligent, less engaging content and by extension people. My posts will seem like fragments, but over time, maybe they will shape a mosaic in praise of art.

An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
Monuments of its own magnificence...

From Yeats “Sailing to Byzantium”
