It finally rained

It finally rained

rain drops on grass

The waft of petrichor had lied to us a few times before. Eyes to the darkening sky, we hoped the rain would actually come. Grass crinkled at the prospect; trees breathed in anticipation; people sat on the porch, giddy with excitement. Yet, for weeks, naught but a few droplets cratered into the dust, absorbed, disappeared. Then nothing.

Everything, including hope was dying. Still covered by the smoke-ash, leaves begged for relief. Rustle. Wait.

  One drop
    Two drops
      Three...

Nothing more.

Until today.

There was no teasing, no dashed expectations; the firmament opened and gave us all relief. It poured. Life rushed back, audibly, metaphorically. And we smiled. The ground smiled. The trees, cleansed and nourished, smiled.
